Proud To Be A Nerd
For those of you that hadn’t figured it out yet I’m a nerd. Not only am I a nerd, I’m a nerd of epic proportions. What does that mean? Well among other things it means that I love science. I love knowing how the world around me works and why it is when I flip a switch a light comes on or off. I like knowing the reasons behind common things like why homo milk goes bad earlier than skim milk. It also means that I’m really excited about a project proposal I’ll be giving to my professors on Wednesday on why I think we should begin producing measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine in Safflower (instead of cell cultures) and how I purpose to carry this out. Although I’ve known all the above for quite a long time and I’ve always enjoyed learning things I haven’t always known that I was a nerd. I was made well aware by others in grade school, perhaps it had something to do with the huge eighties glasses, lanky frame, and straight A’s (except in handwriting where I got C’s and D’s). When I entered high school I wanted to shake this term badly and even managed to pull it off by working out and being known as a soccer star. However I realized when I first started university that I was a nerd and became proud of it. So from that day forward I was loud and proud self proclaimed nerd. The funny thing is that recently I’ve noticed that nerds are cool and in some cases in proclaimed hot. It’s interesting that as you get older nerds seem to get more and more respect. I wonder what it has to do with. I ran into someone I went to high school with a little while ago he’d fall into the category of jock and found that he now works for Canadian Tire. Which is great for him but it makes me think that perhaps the new found nerd respect comes from getting higher paying jobs or perhaps it has to do with having more power. Those things still don’t explain the nerd hotness factor although perhaps Napoleon Dynamite has something to do with it. If that’s the case I’d like to say thank you Napoleon, and thank you Petro for your protect. So I leave it to you friends and neighbours, what explains these trends and observations? More importantly are you nerds? and if you are are you proud of it?

I think I recently discovered that I am in fact a nerd by nature. I think there was a time though that I was a jock slash nerd. But now I am only a jock when it comes to Volleyball. Otherwise, I am pretty much a world class nerd. To be honest though, I never wanted to think that I was in ANY particular class, but my husband says I am a nerd and so is he, so I guess I am. He should know, I mean he's the one that I think is a nerd too. What do you think? Do you think someone can be both classes? A nerd and a jock at the same time? And, what makes a jock anyway? I always thought they wore real expensive sporty clothes, which I don't, but I most all the time where runners. Is that nerdy? Maybe you should add a definition to your post, What do you think the definition of a nerd is? To be honest again, I never really knew what it was. I think I will look it up right now. But I still am curious as to what you define it as. So please PLEASE inform me. Thank-you! (Oh my...I wrote more here than I thought, oops, sorry for the essay, on nerdiness.)
Nerds, of which I am one, have a greater role in society- sports are a game not a bad thing but defenetly something for our amusement. Nerds often aid in the conviniences and functionality of society- they have some (but I don't think all) of the answers. As one grows older one realizes their value more.
I didn't realize I was hot!

I'm a computer geek, so I guess that makes me part nerd, too!
I found that once I got to college, I found a lot of other people like me and enjoyed life a whole lot more!
Nerds rule!
It depends on how you define "nerd." Over at CPW, we don't define you as a nerd just because you are smart, academic and/or unathletic.
We mainly define you as a "nerd" if you have poor or no social skills. E.g., if someone comes in and says "Hi Turtle!" you can either respond as a normal person and say something like "Hi, how are you?" or you can respond as a nerd and hang your head while you mumble something or just ignore the greeting completely. That's the kind of behavior that makes you a nerd.
So you, Wonderturtle, are no nerd, at least not based upon your blogging social skills. Although I'd have to see you in action in person to judge for sure.
CP
I think I'm a Nikki. And you're an Andrew.
You're still beautiful, smart, and the best though.
"I wonder what it has to do with."
Realizing it's real life, and sooner or later, you'll need money to live. That's usually the reason. (Not for me, but for the masses.)
Heehee...you are certainly no nerd if you posed with left hand under the chin as I do in my avatar!!! Nerds wouldn't do that, cos it's cool!!! LOL!
(Hmmm...that would make a good avatar for you! ;-)
I agree with the commenters that say it depends on your definition of nerd. It can be positive or negative.
A negative nerd would, for example, have lots of tape holding his glasses together. heeheehee!!! You are safe on that one!
The shirt is borderline though. *giggles*
As for hotness factor. You resemble Adrian Brody. SOOOOOOO not negative nerdy!!!
Smart is good. Any worth-while girl would certainly pick brains & sweetness over a dumb pumped up jock *BLECK!*.
Ew. No. Andrew's nostrils are NOT bigger than his eyes, and his nose is smaller than his hands.
So no, he does not resemble him at all.
Hahah.
Sorry, I called you "Wonderturtle" - I momentarily confused you with my other turtle blogging friend.
LOL!!!
Sorry nikki, I meant that as a compliment...I have a 'thing' for Adrian Brody...sexy as hell, I say!
(I've also been know to admit that in past posts.)
(Oh, & I didn't mean to hit on your boyfriend either. Don't hit me!!! Please! It was all in fun!)
*jin ducks & runs away*
Nerds are indeed very hot.
I'm a nerd at heart, always have been. I find enjoyment in learning new things, finding out things, seeing how things work, and amassing information! lol
Knowledge is power! Now, I know that most nerds did not do well in school, and in fact hit their stride later, in college and real life... you know why? Because a nerd is interesting! They are smart, usually have a great sense of humor, and can carry on a conversation. Most grow into their looks and become comfortable with who they are... now that is sexy!
Where are all the jocks etc. who once the good looks fade, are still left with 'stupid', or worse, boring!?
To me the word, Nerd, doesn't have any bad meanings to it.
OH, by, not doing well in school I meant socially...
Another, OH, lol I left you a comment under, Bunny Suicides... I'm interested to hear what you did for your smog project.
In school I didn't really fall into any particular category, I got along with the nerds (yep, even the girl that wanted to become a nun, and did become a nun) and got invited to the "Tree group"s parties (they bloody ran the school).
I think I am a nerd in that I don't really worry if it's cool or not, if I love something I love it. Hence... my crushes on very unusual looking men such as Brian May.
Does anyone remember "Revenge Of The Nerds"? I fricking loved those movies.
aren't we all nerds in our own strange ways.
but well this sort of nerd. I agree about Napoleon. Hot dancer at least :) can u dance?

I am a nerd, as is virtually everyone I know and to whom I'm related by blood. Sadly, this doesn't mean I know how a lightbulb works.
A nerd on all acounts, and proud of it!
When we're school age, it seems more important to be with someone "popular" than interesting. I proclaim loudly and proudly: nerdy men are SEXY! (well, except Bill Gates - you can keep him!)
Hey, I get to see you in a couple days!
I don't think that I would classify myself as a nerd during high school at all. I was pretty much the furthest thing from it, I never did homework, I never studied for my test and I smoked a lot of pot and drank on the weekends....and I coasted through school, somwhow still getting B's and low A's. I am not sure how I managed that really. But, now that I am all "grown up" and in College/University I look back and I cant help but think about those wasted years... Sure I have some fuuny stories but when all your stories start out with... " this one time when I was really high.. or this one time when I was drunk" but once you are out of high school those stories arent so great anymore. But I guess now you would classify me as a nerd of sorts. I go to school for 8 hours and on my 3 hour break between classes I go to the library and study and then when I get home I do anywhere from 1-5 hours of homework. I watch Hown it's made and I could watch it all day..
I like your question. I've always been a nerd, but isn't that just another word for 'self-defined,' or 'not controlled by the masses and their pithy definition of coolness'? (Sorry, that was a really nerdy thing to say.)
Also, I wonder if anyone who blogs could be considered a non-nerd. Think about it: you need technical skills, you need to like ideas and dialogue, you need to have little concern for how other people will judge you, how you look is virtually irrelevant.
Bloginess is next to nerdiness.
Thanks for commenting on my site.
Yours is awesome!
Take care!
Well, I think I somewhat have read quite a few definitions from all your commenters here. I am in fact a nerd and have always been because in high school I had no social life really, unless you consider sitting in the hall talking to your sandwich social. My favourite classes were Japanese, Gym, and Creative Writing. Ever since I could remember I loved hanging out in the library, too, reading books, looking at magazines, or learning from ask jeeves. I have always loved learning! In fact, that reminds me...my grad blurb said something like this: Thanks to all my teachers for getting me this far. School has always been apart of my life so now it feels as though a family member is dieing. I will miss all the homework and teachers..." How nerdy is that hey?
Since I play so much volleyball now (at least 12 hours a week) and Gym was one of my favourite subjects back then, I'd have to say that I'm a bit of a jock as well. However, my favourite past times, besides volleyball now, are blogging (that includes reading people and writing my own story) learning, and experimenting.
Since, I will graduate in April as a Library and IT person, I will most likely be considered nerdy or perhaps even a little geeky, but I think that's a positive thing. I hate how it seems there has been a negative conutation put onto the words nerd and geek. It's so not fair to them.

Few items:
1) (and this will answer the nerd question about me right away) Why safflower for the MMR vaccine? Does it cause less adverse reactions? Do you have a trial, clinical or otherwise, in the works?
2) All medical people are nerds. It becomes a matter of survival. We're outnumbered, but smart enough to survive anyway--nerds that is.
3) It's "Pedro," not Petro in Napoleon Dynamite. Just fyi. As in "Vote for Pedro."
Hello All I'll be responding in reverse order and soon I'll have another post up
S. Why safflower? storage of the vaccine because you don't need the cold chain and if you get expression levels high enough it will be cheaper.
Bubbly: I can't dance
Lala: I remember revenge of the nerds
kittycatlane: I haven't ignored your question but I'll have to get to it a bit later
Jin: Thanks for the compliment
Cp: thanks for the compliment
D: I think you can cross classes. as for what a nerd is the people above did a much better job than i can describing it.
Everyone: Thanks for making this an awesome post
S. : Don't correct his spelling. He has a unique language. :D As an English buff, even I refrain from correcting such things, without first being adorably sugar-sweet of course.
So many comments...you lucky bum. And who ever said nerds are not popular? I'd say, "you are and they sure can be".
Oh and Jin and Nikki? You guys look almost related. Are you sisters by chance? Just wondering.
We've never met, that I know of. Heh.
N-Weird :s
Nikki and MT...great to have your own language. I was even half a British lit major and my spelling is awful. Of course the whole British/American spelling differences messed me up even more. More fun to wing it anyway.
Wow it's been awhile since we've heard from you...I hope everything is alright.
Thanks for asking demara, I've been busy but decided to make a post :)
why does that make you a nerd?
